The development of BESS infrastructure begins with the technology, but it is measured by the ability to find the right solution for the local area, the grid and the context in which the project takes shape.
The Valmontone BESS project in Lazio is a clear example of this approach.
Originally developed with a capacity of 200 MW,the project was further refined during the development phase to reflect the evolving characteristics of the surrounding area, including land and infrastructure considerations.
This process ultimately enabled the project to reach a final authorized capacity of 250 MW, while maintaining the connection to the same Terna substation, with a dedicated stall located less than 300 meters from the project site.
A project shaped by its local context
Reaching the project’s final configuration required consideration of a range of factors, from the assessment of the local context and grid connection requirements to the completion of the permitting process.
Engagement with local authorities, individual landowners and other relevant third parties was equally important throughout the development process.
This ongoing dialogue supported the project’s development and helped define the measures required to ensure its integration into the local context, including the agreements established with the Municipality and the works required to improve site accessibility and upgrade the surrounding road network.
A milestone for Sphera Energy
With the Valmontone authorisation, Sphera Energy has exceeded 1 GW of authorised capacity, reaching a significant milestone in its growth journey.
Since its foundation in 2023, the company has obtained the Autorizzazione Unica for 10 projects, totalling 1,180 MW of capacity.
This achievement reflects the team’s ability to develop projects in different geographical contexts, addressing their specific characteristics with a practical, execution-focused approach.
Underpinning these results are the company’s established experience in the energy sector and an agile entrepreneurial approach, characterised by swift decision-making, flexibility and the ability to tailor solutions to the specific characteristics of each project.
