At Sphera Energy, we are committed to developing utility-scale battery storage projects in Italy that not only support the energy transition but also respect and protect the country’s cultural heritage.
Protecting cultural heritage in energy development
Italy’s rich historical and archaeological landscape requires careful planning when delivering energy transition infrastructure.
That’s why in areas identified as having a high archaeological risk, we systematically undertake in-depth preliminary assessments and, where necessary, implement on-site excavation and survey campaigns.
This proactive approach allows us to:
- Ensure full compliance with heritage protection regulations;
- Minimize the risk of permitting and construction delays;
- Build trust with municipalities, heritage authorities, and local communities.

Supporting bankable, sustainable projects
To date, over 220 MW of our battery storage projects have ecured planning consent, with another 460 MW expected to follow in the coming weeks and months. These early assessments reduce risk, support long-term project bankability, and build stakeholder confidence.
Preserving heritage, powering the future
Our approach reflects a simple principle: respect for the past and responsibility for the future. By integrating archaeological surveys into our development process, we protect Italy’s heritage while advancing its energy transition and energy security goals.
